Rated excellent: free legal training gives KiCA members greater confidence

Knowing how to recognise a legal issue, ask the right questions and challenge a decision can make a real difference to the people you support. Recent feedback on the free legal training available through KiCA membership shows how much participants value that support.

Delivered through our partnership with Access Social Care, the training received 100% excellent ratings from those who provided feedback, with 100% saying they would recommend it to others.

The feedback also highlights something beyond satisfaction with the sessions: participants reported greater knowledge, confidence and preparedness to put their learning into practice.

Across all six questions exploring the impact of the training, 100% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that it had made a positive difference.

They reported increased knowledge of the subject and felt better equipped to exercise their rights or support others to do so. They also felt more confident identifying and dealing with legal issues in social care practice, and challenging practices or decisions that may be incorrect.

Respondents felt better prepared to help themselves or those they assist access necessary care. They also agreed that the training positively impacts the health and wellbeing of people with social care needs.

For care providers, these are practical benefits. Understanding the rights of the people you support can help you recognise when something needs closer attention and feel more confident about the next step.

Participants particularly valued the trainers’ knowledge, clear explanations and opportunities to ask questions.

One respondent said:

“The training was informative and answered a lot of my questions. The presenter was knowledgeable and took the time to fully explain.”

Another highlighted the value of learning in a smaller group:

“Really informative and I liked the small group approach as it was easy to ask questions. I will certainly be making use of the services on offer”

That opportunity to explore questions matters. Social care teams encounter situations where the way forward is not always clear. Accessible training provides space to build understanding and connect legal principles with the issues that arise in practice.

Our partnership with Access Social Care gives KiCA members access to free legal support, including one-to-one phone calls and training, focused on the rights of people receiving care and support.

This can help members explore questions around assessments, reviews, changing care needs and proposed reductions in support. You do not need to be certain that something is a legal issue before making an enquiry.

The recent feedback is an encouraging reminder of the value this benefit can bring to your team and the people you support.
